07/12/08  Skerries win top of  table clash

Skerries Town FC           4 Cloughertown FC            2

After the frost lifted Skerries finally got to play after a number of weeks off due to weather. Within the first 10 minutes Skerries had settled first and pushed forward with Eoin Smith and Ben Hunter both having shots saved well by the Cloughertown keeper. Skerries passed the ball around well with Adam Johnson linking well with Cian Archbold to send Eoin Smith into space only to be tackled winning a corner.

The first goal came when a Cloughertown clearance into midfield was knocked over the defence by Aaron Wynne, and Masudi Peniketo latched onto it and fired home. The second goal was not long in coming. Aaron Wynne floated in a perfect cross however it was cleared out but flicked back to see Peter Lacey rise above everyone to head home to his mothers delight. Just before half time Skerries got a 3rd goal, Daire Grimes launched a ball into the Cloughertown half it was flicked on and Eoin Smith slotted in with the outside of the boot.

In the second half Cloughertown came out fighting and after a poor clearance Skerries gave away a penalty which was converted. Both Luke O'Connor and Shane Dennis played well clearing up any attacks that came their way. Richie Armstrong worked hard on the right wing taking every opportunity to ran at the defence. Skerries final goal again was scored by Masudi. Having picked up on a great through ball he scored slipping the ball passed the keeper. Off he went for his now traditional summersault. Late on in the game Cloughertown picked up a second goal following a mistake in the Skerries defence.

It was another great team performance and the man of the match was Daire Grimes in goals, providing one goal and pulling off a number of great saves in the game.

02/11/08  Skerries back to winning ways

Skerries Town FC   4   Boyne Rovers    1

After a 3 week break with no matches Skerries returned to league action with a hard fought win. The first 20 minutes of the match were low key with both teams struggling to settle into any rhythm. Skerries had a couple of chances that were not on target from Andrews and Peniketo. With 5 minutes for the first half to go Skerries broke the deadlock.

Having worked the ball out of defence, Kian Coleman found Eoin (Terrier) Smith who turned his marker only to have the ball cleared for a corner. Andrews took the corner and floated a great ball right into the heart of the box where it was headed home by Masudi Peniketo. Within 2 minutes it was 2 – 0 after Aaron Wynne clipped a ball over the defence for Nathan Andrews to side foot into the net.

Into the second half Skerries went 3 – 0 up after a clearance from Shane Dennis found Andrews, he slipped a ball through to Peniketo who fired home.

Boyne Rovers never gave up and they got their reward when a poor tackle in the box gave away a penalty. Daire Grimes in goal made a great save however Boyne slotted home the rebound.  Skerries finished the game off, again a clearance from Shane Dennis over the Boyne defence put Peniketo through and he finished off in style to completed a great hat-trick. His celebrations of a summersault was well deserved.

It was another good team performance against a tricky Boyne Rovers Team.

12/10/08  Skerries and Baldoyle finish all square

Skerries Town FC   1  Baldoyle Utd   1

Both sides went into this fixture unbeaten and the first half showed why. Both defences held the line well letting little advance towards the keepers. Skerries had a couple of close efforts in this half the first arising from a cross. Kian Coleman crossed in from the left and Masudi Peniketo saw a great diving header go inches wide of the right post. Ben Hunter picked a ball up outside of the Baldoyle penalty box and worked the ball pass 2 defenders and curled the ball round the keeper only to see it come of the far post.

Against the run of play Baldoyle scored after a ball from the right found their player with a simple tap in to make it 1 -0.  Skerries came back at Baldoyle and it wasn’t long before it was 1 – 1. The terrier Owen Smith won the ball down the left and fired  a great ball across the front of goal leaving Nathan Andrews a tap in.

In the second half there were few chances and again the best opportunities fell to Skerries. Masudi went through on goal only to see a great tackle from the Baldoyle number 5. Skerries won a free kick which was floated in by Aaron Wynne which end up just wide of the post. Baldoyle rode their luck at times as the match finished all square.

05/10/08  SFAI Troy Cup Exit

Kentstown   2        Skerries Town FC    0

On a damp afternoon in Kentstown Skerries fell to their first defeat of the season. Skerries defence had to be re-arrangde due to an injury to centre back Shane Dennis. The game started with most of the play concerned in midfield and with little between the teams. Richie Armstrong worked hard on the right linking well with Masudi but they could not break down the Kentstown defence.

Kentstown scored their first goal from the penalty spot. Having won the ball in midfield they got the ball up the right wing and when the cross came in, it made contact with a flying hand. The penalty was dispatched well to the keepers right. Skerries battled on with Cian Archbold and Owen Smith closing down the play well. Into the second have saw Shane Brassington come in at left back in place of Kian Coleman. Skerries won a free kick just outside the box, which was taken by Nathan Andrews who saw his shot just go over the bar. Skerries won a number of corners however never made them count. As the game went with Skerries pushing for the equaliser, the Skerries defence found themselves stretched as Kentstown drove down the right. They got the ball into the box where the left winger found himself unmarked with a simple tap in to take the score to 2 – 0.

Skerries worked hard through the team and should be proud of the performance put in by all.

21/09/08

Skerries Town FC  10    Phoenix FC   0

After 2 draws last season this was expected to be a tight game at Mourne View. This was not the case as Skerries came out chasing the game from the kick off.

After only 5 minutes Skerries went 1 - 0 up. Daire Grimes feed the ball out to the right wing to Richie Armstrong who crossed into the Phoenix box, Nathan Andrews pulled it back for Ben Hunter to fire home. 5 minutes later Skerries were 2-0 up after a fine shot from Hunter found the post only for Masudi to side foot into the net. As the first half drew to a close Skerries scored again following a pass from Andrews found Armstrong who scored.

The second half saw Skerries take total control with Nathan Andrews scoring a hat trick with the pick of them being his third, ball out from Luke O'Connor was flicked on by Cian Archbold and Andrews chipped over the keeper to score. Richie Armstrong bagged another 2 goals both well taken to complete his hat trick. Ben Hunter finished off a Nathan Andrews corner to get his 2nd of the game. Skerries 10th goal came in the final minute of the game with Kian Coleman splitting the defense with a great pass to Eoin Smith who ran on to finish in style. Great performance from the team against an under -strength Phoenix who were missing a number of key players.

14/09/08 - Under 13A off to a winning start

Trinty/Donaghmede 0   Skerries Town FC 2

After a poor season last year Skerries got off to exactly the start they were looking for. In an evenly fought first half there was little between the teams. Both defences were strong with the goalkeepers having little to do.

It was a different second half with Skerries driving forward and they didn’t have to wait long before the first goal was scored. Kian Coleman brought the ball out of defence knocked it up the wing to Adam Johnson who nudged it to Masudi Peniketo on the edge of the box. A neat one two with Nathan Andrews saw Masudi through and  he fired the ball under the out coming keeper to score. 5 minutes later it was 2–0, Shane Dennis cleaning up a Trinty attack back to Daire Grimes in goals. He launched the ball into midfield where it was flicked on by Ben Hunter to Masudi who used his strength to break through the defence and score.

As the game drew to a close Skerries had a strong case for a penalty following a great run from Ben Hunter but it wasn’t given. The final whistle blew on what was a great team display from Skerries.

Skerries would like to thank Lynch Interact who are sponsoring the team this year.
