Skerries Under 8 team managed by Tommy O'Brien and Brian Simpson received some bad news following last weekend's match against Cloghertown. In the course of the first quarter their star midfielder, Jake Kenny, won a challenge for the ball. Unfortunately in the process he hurt his ankle and had to be substituted. With the team entering the final quarter losing 2-0, Jake asked to go back on and play for the final quarter. He helped drive the team forward and they were very unlucky to lose 2-1 in the end.
It was only discovered in hospital after the match that Jake had in fact broken a bone in his ankle and is now in a cast for at least 6 weeks. Tommy is considering sending Jake over to Stamford Bridge to see if the treatment on Arjen Robben's similar injury could be used to get Jake back before the end of the season.
Our admiration goes out to Jake for continuing to play through the pain of his injury. Bert Trautmann only played on, many years ago, with a broken neck because he did not have to head the ball. Jake was still taking corners and free kicks with his broken ankle.
They breed them hard by the sea in Skerries.
03/03/05 - Bray Wanderers come to town
On Sunday next, because we had requested a blank LSL day, as some of our players had made arrangements for a weekend away, we have been asked by Bray Wanderers to facilitate them in a pre-season friendly.
Although Manager Alan Sweeney will be absent, the team will be jointly managed by Duane Crean and Paul Smith and it will be an opportunity to give much needed match practice to some of our January signings, plus it will be a more than useful workout for the rest of the panel.
Bray, newly promoted to the eircom Premier Division, will travel with a full strength squad, as manager Pat Devlin runs his eye over his players before the serious business of league matches commence on the 25/6 March.
This is a rare opportunity to see an eircom league team in action in Skerries so we expect a big crowd “down the Lane” for what we hope will be an entertaining game.
Please note that Kick-off is at the earlier than normal time of 1.00 P.M.
28/02/05 - Leinster Senior League Report
Skerries Town 2 Leixlip Utd. 2
Last Sunday’s fixture against lowly Leixlip failed to yield the expected 3 points, but in the end, probably a fair result.
Overall, a tough 90 minutes, when, for long periods we dominated the play, conceded a 15th minute penalty – which was excellently saved by Eamonn Byrne – went a goal down in the 2nd half, then went 2-1 up only to be pulled back to level terms with 5 minutes to go.
The 1st goal of the game came early in the 2nd half, when a poorly defended free kick was only partially cleared and a Leixlip boot fired it to the net through a mass of bodies in the home penalty area.
The response was sharp and quick as within 2 minutes we were level through a Paul Doherty header from a Gary Woodhead corner. This was followed 10 minutes later by another corner and another goal this time a rare one from the head of Trevor Langan.
Just when we were looking toward the clock, we conceded a needless corner on the right and the ball went directly to the net off the near post. So 2-2 it was.
“ I don’t know how Leixlip are in the position they’re in near the bottom of the table, as they played with spirit right through and probably deserved to get something out of the game. I can’t really fault our lads as the attitude was right, we came back well from their goal, but then gave away a sloppy one near the end”, were manager Alan Sweeney’s comments after the game.
The 1sts are idle this weekend but with the possibility of a friendly against Premier eircom league side, Bray Wanderers. (More to come on this when details are finalised)
The 2nds are back in action on Saturday with a home fixture against Donaghmede side , Trinity Sports, when they will be striving to maintain their position as League Leaders.
28/02/05 - Under 15 and 16 Match Report
Under 15 Report
Skerries Town 4 Trinity Sport and Leisure 1
This was a good win for skerries after a long absence from the league due to posponments and cup matches. With games in hand and ground to make up Skerries have a point to prove to show they mean buisness in there league campaign . A stuttering start saw some good defending keep Trinity at bay and they were unlucky not to get a penalty. Skerries reshaped and carved out a fine first goal as Shane Langan put in Danny Cripps to score his first goal of the season. Skerries began to get well on top with Chrissy Branagan going close before the ever reliable Sean Lynch scored to make it 2-0 before half time.
Skerries made a fine start to the second half & with Steven O’Leary growing in confidence in the middle of the park and Langan & Branagan causing problems on both flanks, Skerries took the game to Trinity and began to play nice football. Both second half goals were a combination of team play with Cripps breaking through and lobbing the keeper only to hit the cross bar and Lynch scoring the third goal from the rebound. The fourth goal resulted from a nice ball from O’Leary to Lynch who went on a fine run with a shot at the end saved by the keeper only for Cripps to blast home.
Skerries sat back a little and conceded a late goal which was unfortunate as the combination of Bren Carberry and Colm McGurty at the centre of defence had played well.
Under 16 Report.
Skerries Town 3 Willows 1
Skerries Town under 16’s continued their good form of late with a 3-1 win over Willows FC in the North Dublin Under 16 League game at Mourne View Park last Sunday.
The opening exchanges were evenly contested with neither team able to create any real openings. Skerries, playing with the advantage of a strong breeze, did force Willows to concede a number of corners but were unable to take advantage. On 21 minutes Willows opened the scoring somewhat against the run of play. The Willow’s defence cleared a Skerries corner on the right. A long punt up field deceived Garrett and O’Brien in the Skerries defence and the Willow’s No 8 scored with ease past Farrell in the Skerries goal.
Skerries were level within 10 minutes. This time a corner on the left was fired into the box by Bolger and with bodies everywhere it was the quick reaction of Martin who pounced to rifle the ball to the roof of the net.
The second half started much like the first with Skerries pressing forward. Willows were finding it hard to get past the Skerries center back pairing of Brennan and Bolger. Martin and O’Brien in midfield were slowly getting more time on the ball and the switch of Power to the left-hand side of midfield was causing Willows all sorts of trouble. Half way through the half Skerries got the break through their play deserved. A long pass from Garrett found Cashman in the inside right position. He cleverly cut inside his marker and slotted the ball into the net past the advancing Willow’s keeper.
Willow’s immediately went in search of an equaliser but the Skerries defence was held firm with full backs O’Brien and Garrett at their best. With 7 minutes remaining Skerries secured the points with a third goal. Cashman again slipped his marker to race half the length of the field and with only the keeper to beat he cleverly squared the ball to Mulvany for an easy tap in.
Skerries management were clearly delighted with this win. "This win keeps us on the tails of Walshestown in second place" said manager Mick Bolger. "Willows are a fine side and last term they beat us twice, so this victory is more the sweeter for that" continued the delighted manager.
26/02/05 - 7 aside roundup
The 7B, 8D, 9B, and 9G were all idle but unfortunately it was a bad day for those teams who were in action, with all our teams being beaten and in most cases bowing out of their respective cup and shield competitions.
8B1 Skerries Town. 1-2 Cloughertown
9F1 Skerries Town 1-3 Swords Manor
10C Swords Rovers 2-1 Skerries Town
10E1 Rush Ath 5-3 Skerries Town
10G1 Skerries Town 0-4 Swords Manor
10E1 Beaten by neighbours Rush.
The Under 10E1 headed across to Rush to take on their local rivals in the NDSL Cup clash. A draw would be enough for Skerries to progress to the next round and this looked well within their grasp during a lively first 10 minutes. Midway through the half, Skerries went ahead when Stephen Gaffney played a through ball to Frankie Davison who cooly found the net. Rush came straight back at Skerries and scored the equaliser after some good work by the Rush number seven. Skerries again went on the offensive and were rewarded after good work by Brian Savage was followed by a great strike from Stephen Gaffney made it 2-1 to Skerries just coming up to half-time.
Unfortunately, for Skerries, Rush came out in the second half with a different attitude and Skerries were on the defensive for most of this half. Rush soon equalised and went ahead almost immediately. Skerries had to rely on the quick break to try and get something back and some good work by Lao Wilde failed to produce the goal they needed. With Skerries looking for the equaliser, they left a few gaps at the back and Rush capitalised on this by scoring another two goals. This score flattered Rush and a late consolation goal by Nathan Canning for Skerries made the scoreline a bit more presentable.
This result leaves Skerries still in the cup and facing a playoff as all three teams in the group finished with one win each.
25/02/05 - Venue reversed for Seniors on Sunday
The LSL Div.1 game with Leixlip Utd. has been changed to our Park Lane ground on Sunday next – kick-off at 2.30 PM.
This has been done due to the uncertainty of the playability of the Leixlip pitch.
So make sure to get down the Lane on Sunday to cheer on Sweeney’s Men.
20/02/05 - Good Double for seniors at week-end
It was 3 points each for our 1st and 2nd sides last week-end which means that both move towards the top of the table.
Senior Saturday St James Athletic 1 Skerries Town 2
This was a vital clash where 3rd place were playing 4th place and the winner would take a crucial step forward in securing one of the two promotion slots. Because of injuries, work commitments and other absentees the team travelled only with 12 players. The omens were not looking good when two of the cars got hopelessly lost but the squad eventually arrived with 40 minutes to kick off.
The pitch itself was quite long and also very heavy following the recent bad weather. Skerries lost the toss and had to play against a strong wind. It was a nervous start by Skerries and the home team should have gone in front when a mistake by the defence allowed a forward to ghost in at the back but the forward contrived to put the ball wide. However, within 20 minutes St James Athletic went ahead went slack marking allowed a clear-cut chance and there was no mistake this time.
Skerries then started to play and carved out 3 good chances before the break. The first fell to Stewy Mangan from a Kevin Farrell free kick when from a well timed run the header just over the bar. The second fell to Colm Durkan who crashed a header off the bar and finally on the blow of half time Colm Noone was played through and with only the goalie to beat blasted over.
Now having the wind at their backs Skerries started strongly in the second half. After a period of sustained pressure Paul Kane hit a wonderful shot with the outside of his right foot which flew in to top of the net. Those who remember likened it to Paul Breitner’s goal in the 1972 World Cup finals. Within a further 10 minutes Skerries went ahead when after good interchange between Darren Barlow and Colm Noone the latter was fouled by the keeper for a clear-cut penalty. Stewy Mangan again did the needful from the penalty spot making it 3 out of 3 from the penalty spot this season.
Unfortunately Skerries now concentrated on defending the lead and it took a goal line clearance from Colm Durkan in the last minute to secure all 3 points. It was however an impressive performance considering the absence of so many regular players.
Senior Sunday Skerries 3 St. Mochta’s 0
Don’t let the score line fool you. This wasn’t an easy one. Mochta’s are a bogey team for Skerries and for lone periods Sunday’s game looked like the trend would continue.
A goal up after 6 minutes when Rory Kerr pounced on a bad mistake in the visitors defence, for the next 60 minutes, Skerries had to work very hard to keep their lead. This time the back four of Rory McCaffrey, Trevor Langan, Paul Doherty and Neil Gallagher took the honours and when anything got through, then Eamonn Byrne capably dealt with it.
As the 2nd half progressed and with Brendan Moore withdrawn into mid-field, the home side began to get a better grip on the game and eventually in the 80th minute, from a Martin Beggs flick on Moore outpaced the defender to squeeze past the Mochta’s keeper for goal no. 2.
This definitely eased the pressure and although Mochta’s never stopped trying to come back, it was Martin Beggs who had the last say when in injury time, he chased onto a through ball and holding off his marker passed the ball into the net to round off the scoring.
3-0 was a bit harsh on St. Mochta’s but nevertheless a well earned win that move us above them in the table on goal difference.
Alan Sweeney was happy with a job well done. “This was never going to be easy and it wasn’t. But the way that the team worked as a unit when under pressure and still had something left in the last 10 minutes was a credit to them. Now we just have to ensure that we continue with this attitude in all our games – not just the supposedly tough ones.”
20/02/05 - 18's advance to 4th Round of FAI Youths Cup.
Skerries Town progress to the 4th round of the FAI Youths cup following a 4-2 victory in an exciting game against Kildare Town at Skerries last Sunday. Kildare started the brighter and forced Skerries back from the off. Attack after attack from Kildare saw Skerries defend in numbers. After only 6 minutes however the Kildare's striker opened the scoring when he lashed the ball to the back of the net, from a free kick on the edge of the box, after some sloppy defending by Skerries. Worse was to come after 23 minutes. Another corner on the right was only half cleared and again the impressive Kildare Striker hit a beautiful volley from just outside the box to the top left hand corner of the Skerries net leaving Mooney with no chance.
This second goal only seemed to kick Skerries to life. Chances fell to Lamont and Farrell but the Kildare defence held firm. In the 34 minute Skerries got the break through their play now deserved. Good work by Adam Tolan and Lamont set up Armstrong who had his shot brilliantly saved by O'Rourke in the Kildare goal but he could only watch as Davey slammed the rebound to the roof of the net.
The second half was all Skerries. It seemed only a matter of time before Skerries would be on level terms. But it was not until the 73 minute the breakthrough came. The well organised Kildare defence were finally beaten when Lamont, Tolan and finally Davey combined to set up Armstrong who took his time to slot the equaliser past O'Rourke. Five minutes later Skerries were ahead. Good work in the left by Wilde and Farrell resulted in the latter getting a cross into box that eluded O'Rourke and Davey was on hand to bundle the ball over the line to protests from the Kildare defence.
Skerries held their advantage with some resolute defending in the final 10 minutes from Hogan, Wilde, Ryan and Noone. And with only seconds remaining Skerries secured victory when a break from defence down the left involving Farrell, Tolan and Lamont resulted in Farrell crossing to the back post where Bolger was on hand to wrap up the victory.
"A trilling finish to a trilling game" was manager Barnes assessment of the game. "It's great to win any game after being 2-0 down, Kildare are a fine side and we are delighted with this win"

Under 9B Top of the table clash finishes all square
Howth Celtic 3 SKerries Town 3 (Wynne, Jenkinson, Hess)
Skerries Town traveled to Howth to take on Celtic in this top of the table clash. The sides met early in November in dreadful weather conditions and couldn’t be separated on that day, the game ending 2-2.
Since then, both sides have remained unbeaten and have an identical record, even down to goals for and against. This was always going to be a close encounter.
Skerries started well and took an early lead thro’ a great strike from Aaron Wynne following an in-swinging corner kick from Kian Coleman. Early in the second quarter, Howth were awarded a free kick close to the edge of the box. Daire Grimes in the Skerries goal had no chance as the Howth striker found the top corner with an excellent strike. Skerries took the lead again when Robbie Jenkinson latched on to a long clearance and coolly curled the ball past the advancing Howth keeper.
Howth struck back immediately with an equaliser and took advantage of some hesitancy in the Skerries defence to take the lead just at the end of the second quarter.
The Third quarter remained scoreless despite some nice football from both sides. With time running out in the last quarter, and Skerries still trailing by one, a bold move by Skerries manager Kevin Wynne paid off. Billy Hess, the Skerries centre half was pushed forward and with almost the last attack, jinked his way into the box and sided footed the ball past the Howth keeper for a well deserved equaliser.
The game finished 3-3 and once again these two sides cannot be separated……not for the faint hearted.
Under 10C on top in local derby
Glebe North 1 - Skerries 3 ( Drumm, Carron 2)
Skerries under 10's currently unbeaten and top of their league faced an away fixture against the in form Glebe North who are third position in the league. Glebe started the game strong and not before long they went ahead.
This shocked Skerries into action. Some good football was played and with Gavin Drumm sweeping at the back and Conor Lennox and Robert McBrien holding play it wasn't long before Skerries got the equaliser. Some good footwork by Eoin Carron and Neil Convey resulted in a loose ball to Gavin Drumm who caught the ball half volley and scored.
Glebe upped the tempo and Ian Tolan kept Skerries in the game with a string of great saves, one in particular which should have been a goal except for Ian's brilliance. Skerries started then to play football with some great passing movements. Eoin Carron received the ball and dribbled his way past several defenders and put the ball low to the keepers right for a well deserved goal. Craig Mahon, Kevin Farrell, and Jordan Grimes were solid in midfield. Skerries lost Jordan with a back injury for a while but he recovered.
Some fine teamwork and spirit showed why this team are unbeaten and top of their league with a passing movement which resulted in the third goal. This win put Skerries well ahead in the league and as long as they keep playing this way it will be hard to beat this team.
18/02/05 - Senior squads prospects for the week-end?
This week-end sees both Senior teams playing crucial games that will have a bearing on their hopes of winning titles or promotion at the end of the season.
On Saturday, the 2nds travel to Stillorgan to take on St. James who lie just behind them in 4th place in the Division. Having played out a 2-2 draw at Park Lane, Paul Walsh’s side will need to be on top of their form to get the three points here. A repeat of the last performance against Garda might be enough, but anything else could mean losing touch with the leaders.
On Sunday, the 1sts are at home to St.Mochta’s from Blanchardstown, who lie 3 points ahead of us in 4th place. The panel is similar to the one that blitzed Dublin Bus 2 weeks back with the exception of Keith Hickey, who picked up a knee injury on Tues night. Alan McCabe, signed from Glebe North in January, comes into the panel for the first time.
Alan Sweeney comments “Mochtas are a decent side, very well organised, who like to play a bit. Over the years, we’ve found it hard to beat them, but if we can repeat our form of 2 weeks ago then it should be some match”
Kick-off is 2.30 P.M. so be sure to come along and support Sweeney’s Men.
18/02/05 - Remember that night in Dalymount
A selection of photos from that memorable night have been added to the photo gallery. Why not check it out! You may be one of the faces in the crowd.
14/02/05 - Senior Side washed out!!
Sundays game away to Leixlip fell victim to the adverse weather conditions that hit at the end of the week. With a pitch inspection at 9.30 A.M. coinciding with a heavy fall of sleet, the word came quickly through that the game was off.
“This was the last thing we wanted” said Manager Alan Sweeney. “We’re on a good run just now and the boys were fired up for this one, as we were dreadful against them in the Metropolitan Cup a few weeks back. However, we now look to next week-end when we have St. Mochtas at home. They’re up there in 4th position just ahead of us, so it should be a cracker for our supporters.”

Senior Sunday Dublin Bus hit for five!!
Sunday morning in Coldcut was bleak, cold and miserable but for our senior team it was no obstacle to producing a 5 star performance that just blew promotion hopefuls, Dublin Bus away.
For most of the 90 minutes, Skerries controlled this game with our midfielders again providing the base to launch attack after attack on the Bus goal. Such was the pace of the game that after 15 minutes we were 2-0 in front. On 12 minutes a through ball by John Donnelly was chased by Rory Kerr, who, in turn, was bundled over by the home keeper and Chris Costello stepped up and calmly shot home the resultant penalty. 3 minutes later, after Martin Beggs was fouled on the edge of the box, Costello again delivered the perfect free kick to the corner of the net. The home side were not prepared to lie down however, and battled back to level proceedings by half time.
The second half was a continuation of the quality play that had been in evidence in the first 45 minutes. In the 56th minute, a Gary Woodhead pass saw Martin Beggs squeeze the ball by the Bus keeper to put us back in the lead. Not content to sit back, the attacks continued and when Brendan Moore beat his marker in the box and pulled the ball back to the inrushing Kerr, it was 4-2. More was to come, when in the 80th minute Moore helped himself to no. 5 after good work by Robbie Richardson. The game then was in injury time when the Bus got their 3rd goal but it wasn’t much consolation to a team that had been comprehensively beaten for only the 2nd time this season.
Alan Sweeney commented afterwards “we have taken 10 points out of 12 in our last 4 games. Today’s display was as good as anything this season and we now have to work hard on Tuesdays and Thursdays to maintain the standards that we set. We’ve moved up to 6th in the table and have 14 games to go and there is no reason why we cannot mount a challenge for promotion”
Senior Saturday
After 2 recent poor performances the team bounced back with a hard fought
but well deserved victory over Garda. Manager Paul Walsh said "I was really
delighted with that display - there was great spirit and commitment from
everyone involved. That puts us back on track". Although Skerries played
the
better football in the first half they were not able to carve out a clear
cut
opening and so the game was scoreless at half-time. At the start of the
second half disaster struck when Keith Farrell allowed a ball to squirm out
of his grasp and the Garda forward was left with the task of scoring into
an
empty net. This set back drove the team forward and Skerries were awarded
an
indirect free outside the Garda Box. Dave Worrell rolled the ball to Kevin
Farrell and he rifled in an unstoppable shot. Skerries then went searching
for winner and Darren Barlow was sprung from the bench. With ten minutes to
go Darren took advantage of a slip up in the Garda defence and was coolness
itself in his finishing. The team then held out for a well deserved
06/02/05 - U15 Report
Skerries 4 Baldoyle 5
Skerries learned the hard way against a well organised Baldoyle losing three goals to set plays in the first half and going in at half time 3-1 down. This was unfortunate as most of the good football was played by Skerries, they were now chasing the game & were forced to change to all out attack. Skerries dominated the second half pulling it back to 3-3 before being hit on the counter attack twice!.. straight after their third goal to go 5-3 down.
The lads heads were down & some did not believe they could win, but with Paul Andrews & Colm McGurty now playing up front the final 15 minutes produced an abundance of chances but Skerries could only take one and were unlucky losers but will have learned a lot to take in to their league campaign.
06/02/05 - U16's beat Swords
Our under 16's had a comfortable 6-0 win over a very determined Swords Celtic side at very muddy Balheary on Sunday. Skerries were always well on top but only lead 1-0 at half time - Mulvany scoring from the spot. The second half was all one way traffic with Skerries adding goals from Brennan (2), Mulvany, Harmon and Cashman. The Skerries number 2 Darragh O'Reilly was delighted not just with the win but the fact that this was Skerries second clean sheet in a row. Darragh said "Our clean sheets are like bananas.......you wait all season for one, then they come in bunches"

01/02/05 - Leinster League Report
The two Senior sides were in action at the week-end with mixed results.
Skerries Town 1 Orwell 2
The Sat. team were confident going into this fixture that they would consolidate their position at the top of the table, as opponents Orwell are in the relegation zone with few victories. Unfortunately, confidence was misplaced, as at the end of the 90 minutes the visitors went home with the three points.
Orwell, despite their league position had a solid shape and although, on the receiving end for most of the game, made the most of what came their way. In fact, having survived a 1st half that was played entirely in their half, they broke away and went into the lead shortly after the resumption, from what looked a suspiciously offside position.
However, there was plenty of time for the home team to regroup and midway through the half, Derek Early got on the end of a free kick and headed past the visiting keeper to level the game. Shortly afterwards, it got worse for the visitors when they had their centre forward red carded for an off the ball offence. Now surely there could only be one winner, but not as we knew it! Again, from a quick break, with three minutes to go, an Orwell player was adjudged to have been fouled in the area by Stewy Mangan and despite the disbelief of all concerned the ref awarded a penalty, which although Keeper Keith Farrell made a brave attempt to save, the ball flew into the bottom left hand corner. That was it then unfortunately as there was no time left to get back into the game.
If there were any positives to be taken from this, Colm Durkan got his first 90 minutes since his broken cheekbone in October. Also, Gerry Grimes and Keith Coleman came in for the final 30 minutes – their first run out since their injuries in early season.
Skerries Town 1 Arklow Town 1
On Sunday, our Seniors hosted Arklow Town, who just missed out on promotion last season. This year, however, with a much changed team and an emphasis on youth they were very much an unknown quantity. But at the end of 90 minutes, they showed that the future is very bright down Arklow way and their contribution to this game made for a tough, open and always entertaining game for the spectators.
The 1st half belonged to Skerries with the mid-field axis of Gary Woodhead, Chris Costello and new signing Rory Kerr, backed up by John Donnelly, totally dominating the game. However, with an excellent save from their young 17 year old keeper from a Brendan Moore volley and resolute defending of countless corners, the visitors went in at half-time with their goal intact.
The lead goal came to the home team in the 21st minute of the 2nd half when, from a free kick just outside the box, Chris Costello stepped up and registered his first goal for the club, by bending the ball around the Arklow wall into the corner of the net.
The home supporters didn’t get much time to enjoy this lead, however, as some 8 minutes later, from a poorly defended corner kick, Arklow were back on level terms.
Despite some substitutions by manager, Alan Sweeney, and pushing people forward to try and regain the lead, the visitors held out and could have stolen the three points when a fantastic volley was equalled by a fantastic save by home keeper, Eamonn Byrne.
Overall, a fair result, although the Arklow boys were probably the happier on the bus journey back to Co. Wicklow.
Manager Sweeney commented afterwards “I was disappointed that we didn’t get the three points, having being playing so well and taken the lead – but , then again we could have lost them all, were it not for Eamonn’s super save near the end. They were a good side, passed the ball well and never stopped trying.”
Transfer News
As the end of January transfer deadline approached, both senior Managers have been busy bolstering their squads for the 2nd half of the season.
Paul Walsh has brought in Matt Brady from Glebe North and Adam Smith from Loughshinney Utd. while Alan Sweeney has been even busier with the signings of Rory Kerr from Ashtown Villa, Alan McCabe and Aaron Costello from Glebe North and former Glebe striker, Stephen Healy who was unattached.
29/01/05 - 7 aside Soccer.....back at last
After the long Christmas break, 7a-side soccer resumed this week-end for some of our teams in the various Cup and Shield competitions.
The 7B, 8B1, 9F1 and 10G1 were all idle and all of our teams in action faired well, with the 10C and 10E1 both winning at home and the 8D, 9B and 9G all winning on their travels.
8D Malahide Utd. 1-2 Skerries Town
9B Woodlawn 1-4 Skerries Town
9G Castleknock 0-2 Skerries Town
10C Skerries Town 4-2 Grange Woodbine
10E1 Skerries Town 4-3 Ladyswell
9B Report Woodlawn 1 Skerries Town 4
Yes it is good to be back. The Skerries Under 9B travelled to Oscar Traynor to take on league rivals Woodlawn in the Frank Shannon Shield on a wet and muddy pitch. There were few signs of rustiness as they took up where they left off in early December and put the Woodlawn defence under pressure right from the start. The pressure paid off midway through the 1st quarter when Kian Coleman swung in a corner from the left and the ball was deflected to the net by the unlucky Woodlawn Centre half.
The game was very even for the next quarter with Billy Hess, Shane Brassington and Adam Johnson outstanding in the Skerries defence. When Woodlawn did threaten, Daire Grimes in the Skerries goal was there to take care of things, with a great save from an equally great strike from Woodlawn centre forward which kept Skerries in front.
Midway through the third quarter, with Woodlawn still very much in it, Skerries were pressing when a cross from Robbie Jenkinson was cleared down field. Skerries defender Shane Dennis took one touch on the half way line, thought about carrying the ball forward, but decided to have a crack and buried the ball into the top right hand corner…What a goal !!.
Skerries continued to press for another goal and were rewarded when Aaron Wynne was tripped on the edge of the box. Shouts for a penalty were ignored by the referee and by Aaron, he coolly stepped up curled the free kick around the wall into the top left corner.
In the last quarter, a rare lapse of concentration in the Skerries defence allowed Woodlawn through to score. Skerries responded immediately with some great work from Ritchie Armstrong who put Aaron Wynne through for his second to seal the game for Skerries.
A delighted Skerries manager Kevin Wynne commented after the game, " This was a great performance after the long break, What a goal from Shane, I'm glad he ignored my instructions not to stray into the opposition half, his goal must be a contender for goal of the season"
Grettings to our number one "foreign" supporter, Mick from Scarborough, England.
30/01/05 - Under 15 and 16 match reports
Under 15's resume with a win
After a long break, the lads were very keen to get back to see if the improvement was to continue on the field & within 5 minutes were in control of the game, the goals should have come but some good goal keeping kept Skerries at bay, a defensive mistake let Skerries in with their first as Sean Lynch scrambled the ball over the line. Skerries continued to dominate with the back four easily dealing with any Malahide attacks & releasing the ball in to good channels to keep up the relentless pressure, Philly Duff, Chrissy Brannigan & Shane Langan all had good chances, before Langan went on a fine run which resulted in the second goal, Langan was showing the full range of his skills & was a joy to watch.
The second half started similar to the first & it was not long before Skerries were awarded a penalty lets say for a theatrical dive by Langan , which was to put a bit of needle into the game, Sean lynch stepped up & buried the penalty to put Skerries 3-0 up , Skerries began to lose their shape & the game became scrappy but again was lit up by a wonder strike with Langan lobbing the keeper from fully 30yds. Only in the Sand Siro on Sunday afternoon would you get that! What was to follow was simply a fantastic way to get your hat-trick Sean Lynch gathering the ball 20yds out & smashing it in to the Malahide net.
Skerries relaxed to much after that & gave away two soft goals to take away what overall was a good team performance much is to come from this side if they can hold it together for the 90.
Under 16 report
Skerries Town under 16's played out a 0-0 draw in the NDSL League Cup with "local" rivals East Meath at Mourne View last Sunday. The first half was an even affair with few chances being created by either side. The second half was much the same. Skerries did have the ball in the East Meath net but Mulvany was adjudged off side. Farrell in the Skerries goal made a fine save from the East Meath no. 8.
In the final 15 minutes Skerries got on top and created a number of chances. But Skerries found the East Meath keeper in tremendous form as he kept efforts by O'Brien, Cashman, Hughes and Harmon out.
This draw keep both Skerries and East Meath in line for a last 16 place.
23/01/05 - Dave's Brenfer Youths team draw with eircom League
Brenfer Youths 2 Eircom Youths 2 Photos
The Brenfer North Dublin League Youths team, managed by our own Dave Barnes, went into their second group game of the FAI Youths Inter League Cup against a fancied Eircom League team at Oscar Traynor Road last Sunday. The game was switched to the all weather pitch as the grass pitch was unplayable due to the recent rains. The North Dublin squad and management were confident of causing an upset following a good show against the AUL League in their opening fixture. That confidence however was shattered within the first minute. Right from the kick off the Eircom League team played the ball down the right side. A cross into the box was missed by a number of defenders and the Eircom no. 9 gave Mark Shannon no chance from 12 yards.
This was a major set back for the NDSL side but the early score only seemed to make the NDSL side more determined. For the next 20 minutes wave after wave of Eircom League attack failed to breach the NDSL defence again where the back line of John Carroll, Eoin Wilde, Rory Noone and Jack Hanratty were outstanding.
In the last 10 minutes of the opening half the Brenfers began slowly to gain more possession in midfield. But the NDSL's best chance came on 39 minutes when McGuinness played the ball wide to the left to Madden, his cross was flicked goalwards by Barry Davey only to be denied a certain score by a super save from Sweeney in the Eircom goal.
What ever was said in the dressing room at half time by managers Barnes and Kelly really fired up the NDSL side. The early stages of the second half was much more even. On 60 minutes the game turned when an Eircom player was sent off for a challenge on Eviston. From the resulting free kick McGuinness, Scanlon and Madden combined to set up Davey who weaved his way into the box only to upended by an Eircom League defender. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Eviston dispatched the penalty right and high to bring the scores level.
Within a minute of the kick off the Eircom were back in front. A slick passing movement down the left and cross into the box found the Eircom centre forward all alone in the 6 yard box who finished at ease.
Encouraged by the management to drive on again that's what they did. O'Flahery beat the centre back and keeper to the ball on the edge of the box only to see his lob drift inches wide. Davey and McGuinness had chances just wide. It was now all NDSL and the introduction of Danny Lamont and Seamus Farrell added much need pace to the attack.
On 84 minutes Hanratty collected the ball 20 yards form his own goal. He played the ball to Scanlon who beat his man on the half way line. Scanlon drove at the heart of the Eircom defence and hit a unstoppable shot from 30 yards to the top right hand corner of the Eircom net to the delight of the NDSL management and supporters
Half chances fell to both sides in the final minutes but there was no further scores. 2-2 was a fair result.
Manger Dave Barnes said after the game "I am delighted with the attitude and skill of the players. The character shown by all the players after that early set back was nothing short of tremendous". He praised each and every one of the squad for their commitment not just to this game but to the training session over the last few weeks.
We must also mention Daves backup team which had a very Skerries Town feel about it: Ciaran Kelly (Asst. Manager) St Columbans, Duane Crean (Coach) Mick Bolger (Goalkeeper Coach) Bernie Peters (Physio) all of course household names for Skerries Town FC.
23/01/05 - Senior Sunday Exit the Metropolitan Cup
Leixlip 2 Skerries 1
After a great winning performance last weekend against league leaders St James Gate, Skerries Town headed to Leixlip for their Metropolitan Cup tie full of confidence.
The game started well and after 15 minutes Brennie Moore latched on to a fine cross from Galo to score and give Skerries the early lead. This was just the start that Skerries needed but unfortunately they couldn't build on it and the inconsistency that has plagued them lately again raised its head.
Leixlip began to come more into the game and were rewarded a penalty and converted just before half time.
The second half was all Leixlip. Skerries failed to re-ignite the fire of the previous weekend and it was backs to the wall stuff for most of the second half. It looked like they might hold out for the draw but it wasn't to be. A long hopeful ball down the middle followed by a mix up in the Skerries defence allowed the Leixlip striker to latch on to a loose ball and steer the ball in to an empty net for a last minute winner.
After the game player manager Alan Sweeney commented, " I am really disappointed with this performance after last weeks great win. We will have to work at raising our game against the so called weaker teams. We have just added Paul Smith to the coaching team and he'll be a great asset but we also need to bring in some new blood to the squad".

16/01/05 - League Leaders Defeated
Skerries Town 1 St. James’s Gate 0
The Christmas break worked wonders for our Senior as they produced possibly their best performance of the season when beating the Division 1 pace setters, St James’s Gate 1-0 on Sunday last.
From the first whistle, they took the game to the “Gate” and maintained a high tempo throughout the 90 minutes. The return from injury of Martin Beggs seemed to bring out the best in his team mates who responded with a performance of determination, passion and honesty which definitely gave the home crowd value for their money.
Although half-time arrived with no score, the position changed with 4 minutes of the restart. Again, exemplifying the spirit within the team, John Donnelly chased down a ball that seemed destined to go wide, and whipped in a low cross which the inrushing Robbie Richardson slammed home from 6 yards for his 7th goal of the season. He had the ball in the net again minutes later, but the referee having first awarded the goal, then, changed his decision after consultation with his assistant.
However, this did not weaken the Home side’s resolve and they continued to battle right to the end of the 90 minutes and the 9 minutes of added time that was played. Although the Gate threw everything at us in those final moments, keeper, Alan Sweeney, wasn’t seriously tested in the Skerries goal.
“If we maintain that type of standard and discipline for the 2nd half of the season then we will definitely move into a challenging position before very long” said a delighted Sweeney after the game.
Senior Saturday
On Saturday, our 2nds. made the trip to Killinarden in the Dublin Mountains to take on Sacred Heart and unfortunately returned pointless having been on the wrong end of a 5-2 defeat.
Scoreless at half-time, it all went wrong in the 2nd period when 2 quick goals knocked the heart out of the team and it was all uphill from there.
“I was disappointed with the way heads went down so quickly, and some players seemed to accept defeat too easily. If we continue with performances like this, then we can say goodbye to any hopes of winning the league” were the after match comments from manager, Paul Walsh.
16/01/05 - “Woodie” appointed Club Captain
Following the recent departure of Niall Bolger to London on a work related contract, 1st Team Manager, Alan Sweeney, has appointed popular mid-fielder Gary Woodhead, as Club Captain. Modest as ever, Gary‘s only comment on accepting was “I deserve it!”
16/01/05 - Under 16's beat Boyne in League Cup.
Our under 16's got off to a winning start in the Ita Farrell League Cup last Sunday. Played in lovely sunny conditions at the Town Park, Boyne made the better start and opened the scoring on 11 minutes. Skerries, however, hit back within a minute. Barry Martin set up an easy chance for Andy Mulvany to level following a great run that opened the Boyne defence. Skerries were now well on top. Further chances fell to Kevin Cashman and Robby Hughes but it was not until the 26 minute that Skerries took the lead. Martin again had the Boyne defence at sixes and sevens and his shot found the roof of the net from 18 yards. Skerries were now well on top but on the stroke of half time an break away by Boyne resulted in the sides going in level at half time.
The second half continued much like the first with Skerries applying all the pressure. Shots from Mulvany and Derek O'Brien just missed the target and the sides remained level. Skerries introduced Paul Brennan for Patrick Duff with half an hour left. Corner after corner followed and it was from a corner on 19 minutes that Skerries got their third. Th ball was only half cleared and Darragh O'Brien played a beautiful passed to Mulvany who scored from 12 yards. The constant pressure was now beginning to tell on Boyne. Another corned, whipped in by Mulvany was powered to the back of the net by Bolger. Chance after chance was not falling to Skerries. Cashman flashed a header wide and Mulvany hit the post when it seemed easier to score. The final score came when Mulvany beat the Boyne keeper to the ball on the by-line. He picked out Cashman in the box who scored from 5 yards.
Asst. Manager Kevin Walsh was delighted with the win. "Its nice to get off to a winning start after the Christmas break and the quality of football was quite high at times" he said after the game. He was, however, somewhat concerned that Skerries have failed to keep a clean sheet this season. "It's something we need to look at in training over the next few weeks" he said.
11/01/05 - Schoolboy 11 a-side are back, weather permitting
This week-end we have the return of fixtures for our 11 a-side schoolboy teams. Our under 11Prem, 13Prem and 14A all return to league action with the 11D playing in the Eamon Ludden Cup, the 15B in the Ned Behan Cup, the 16Prem in the Ita Farrell League Cup, the 17A North in the Leinster Youth Cup and the 18Prem in the FAI Youth Challenge.
09/01/05 - Weekend washout
The weather was the only winner at the weekend with both our Senior teams defeated by the storms that swept the country.
On Saturday, the 2nd Team’s game against Orwell was called off – one of the rare occasions when our Park Lane ground is deemed unplayable. A good decision considering the heavy schedule of games played over the Christmas period.
Sunday’s away game for the 1st Team against Dublin Bus was predictably enough postponed on Sat. afternoon due to the waterlogged state of their pitch. This was indeed a blessing in disguise for Alan Sweeney’s team as Trevor Langan, Robbie Richardson and Chris Costello were all victims of the current flu bug and had been unavailable for selection.
Hopefully, all will recover shortly, as next Sunday we play host to league leaders, St. James’s Gate, which should ensure another big crowd “down the Lane”
03/01/05 - Charity game yields €1000 for Asian Disaster Fund
Sunday’s Charity match between the 11 a side and the 7 a side Managers plus the proceeds of the weekly Blottto Draw means that a cheque for €1000 is on its way to the Irish Red Cross as a small token of assistance towards the Asian Disaster Fund.
The game itself, which had a multiplicity of shapes, sizes, ages and sexes involved, ended strangely enough, in a 2-2 draw and then had to be decided by penalty kicks with U.15 Manager Mark O’Leary calmly slotting home the deciding sudden death penalty.
Goals in the 1st half from Kevin Wynne – who now insists he should be on the First
Team - and John Swift, left the “11 a sides” with much to do, but a combination of abuse, threats and eventually bribes to referee Gary Tolan meant they drew level late in the 2nd half.
Then there was the unbearable tension (?) of the shootout which brought the proceedings to a welcome end much to the relief of the suffering spectators. photos
20/12/04 - Christmas Draw
Our Grand Christmas Draw took place in the Gladstone on Friday night last and an enjoyable night was had by all those who attended.
Most of the 30 prizes went locally. Some exceptions were the Christmas Hamper which went to Belfast to Frankie Davison's mother, a Turkey to Clonsilla and a ham to Dunlear.
The main prize, the 'Sporting Dream Holiday' was won by Clodagh Kenny of Moorings Cove, Skerries who was present on the night to claim her prize.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those members who made a great effort in selling tickets for the draw and of course everyone who supported the club by purchasing tickets.
