14/11/11 - Under 17's Advance in FAI Youth Cup

Having gained a bye in the first round of the All Ireland Cup, Skerries were drawn against Woods Utd away at Collinstown Park.

Things didn't look good before the team had even departed from Skerries. With only 10 players, which included no regular goalkeeper Skerries were already up against it.

Woods Utd had defeated Trim in the last round and in the league they had only lost 1 of their first 7 games. Callum Roberts volunteered to mind nets in the first half and as the game kicked off Skerries set up as 4-4-1. Within 4 minutes of the start Skerries went 1-0 down when an opportunist shot from Woods dipped under the bar.

As the game settled down it was very much even possession with neither team taking control. After 15 minutes Skerries went 2-0 down following a cross from the right that wasn't cleared and Woods slotted it home.

Skerries started to settle more and got themselves more into the game. Good runs from Ben Hunter and Adam Mulvany came to nothing. With 5 minutes left of the first half Skerries scored. A lovely ball over the defence by Adam Mulvany saw Nathan Andrews chase the ball with a Woods player. Nathan got to it first and flicked it over the out coming keeper to take the score to 2-1 at half-time.

The second half was again a tight affair with neither team taking control. After about 20 minutes, Skerries got back on even terms. Again following a ball over the top of Woods defence from Callum Roberts, Shane Dennis clipped the ball over the keeper to make it

2-2.

Skerries did have a couple of chances with great runs from Tommy Ryan and Daire O'Connell but again both came to nothing. Having changed keeper for the second half, Ben Hunter was now in goals and had nothing to do until 5 minutes from time. Woods got a good cross from the left and following a goal mouth scrabble the ball was goal ward bound and somehow Ben got a hand to it to push it round the post.

Extra time was next with neither team producing anything of note. Nathan Andrews did hit the cross bar with about 5 minutes left.  As the referee blow time it was now down to penalties.

Woods were first to take and scored, followed by Ben Hunter who also scored. Woods scored their second as did Callum Roberts. Woods third was well placed to the right hand side but was saved by Hunter. Up stepped Shane Dennis who fired the ball into the back of the net. Woods fourth was also placed in the right side of goals and again Ben made a great save. Adam Mulvany placed the ball knowing that if he scored it was over. He calmly shot low and left scoring to take Skerries through to the next round of the cup.

A real team effort!!   Final Score: 2-2   (Skerries win 4-2 on penalties)

Team:
Ben Hunter, Callum Roberts, Leon Cumberson, Jamie Dowling, Shane Dennis, Tommy Ryan, Adam Mulvany, Adam Carberry, Daire O'Connell, Nathan Andrews

New Football Initiative Aimed at Job-Seekers and Unemployed.

Fingal County Council have teamed up with the FAI to launch a new innovative  'Stay Active'  programme aimed at  men and women aged 18-50 years who are  job seekers, unemployed and  particularly long-term unemployed .   This free programme will take place at three locations across the county and is run over three phases starting with weekday recreational 5-a-side football, progressing to FAI Coach education courses for interested participants and finishing with linking to local clubs to assist with coaching underage teams.

Co-ordinated by Fingal County Council/FAI development officers Paul Keogh, Michael Pender and Sharon Boyle the programme will be rolled out in Balbriggan, Swords and Mulhuddart , and is fully supported by Fingal Leader partnership, community Gardai, and Rapid in Blanchardstown and Fingal County Council’s sports unit.

Chief Executive of the FAI John Delaney said, "The Stay Active League pilot scheme is one that I hope will capture the interest of people who are currently out of work. As we all know, the unemployment rate is increasing and we are happy to use our game in partnership with local authorities to address this difficult social issue. Sport, and the motivation it provides, has an important role to play in assisting people, who through no fault of their own, find themselves without a job. If the pilot schemes prove successful we hope to be able to roll it out in other areas through our co-funded development officers."

Commenting on the programme Marion Brown, Principal Sports officer with Fingal County Council   added “ We can't underestimate the huge social benefit of an initiative such as this, which allows people to develop and improve their sports and fitness skills, and encourages them to become involved in their communities.  Unemployment, particularly long-term unemployment can be damaging to people's confidence and self-esteem, and the proven health and social benefits of sport and active lifestyles can help reduce these issues in a positive manner.  Fingal County Council fully support this initiative."

10/09/11 - Chairmans Tribute to Derek

Thursday 1st Sept 2011 Skerries Town FC went into shock when their gentle giant Derek Earley died suddenly while doing something that he has loved and done for the best part of his life playing soccer. Derek died while training with his teammates and this has left them shocked, saddened and at a great loss.

Personally I have known Derek since he joined Skerries Town at the ripe old age of eight and have had the privilege to watch his soccer career in the club for the past 23 years.
Derek was an ardent supporter of Liverpool and our National Team and went to see his beloved teams play in Anfield and the Aviva on numerous occasions along with his Dad Kevin.

I knew Derek growing up as a neighbour and footballer playing on teams with my sons. He was a quiet lad always courteous and always had a smile. Through the years that never changed - always got a wave and a smile from him as he passed down Greenlawns in his van on his way to call into see his Mam & Dad or as he jogged out of the dressing room onto the pitch to start a match.

Derek had a great ability in making everyone who met him feel that he was their best friend and was a great support to many.
Throughout the past week I have spoken to and listened to many and all had the same to say about Derek, he was a gentle giant and his fun loving gentle ways made him a firm favourite with everybody who was privileged to know him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family his Mum & Dad Ann & Kevin, his sisters Sylvia and Louise and his girlfriend Aideen and his extended family.
